Working in spaces of opportunity: part of the new NIRO strategy

It is becoming more and more concrete: We have been working on our strategy since the beginning of the year and are receiving support from the Mittelstand-Digital Zentrum Zukunftskultur. Two organizations are involved here with their specialist expertise: the FTK – Forschungsinstitut für Telekommunikation und Kooperation e. V. from Dortmund, which works as a cross-industry research institute and focuses on the application of information and communication technologies, and the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE), which develops application-oriented solutions for a sustainable link between the economy, society and the environment.
The team from the Mittelstand-Digital Zentrum Zukunftskultur led us through our last team workshop in presence for the time being. The focus was on specific content for network work and how the individual areas at NIRO will be structured in the near future. Moving away from fields of action and towards areas of opportunity
NIRO has been working in fields of action to date. These currently include purchasing, logistics, import and export, Industry 4.0, innovation, HR and marketing. However, these fields of action are very focused on individual functional areas. In recent times, however, it has often become apparent that interfaces are becoming increasingly important with increasing digitalization and that functional areas need to work together more closely on certain key topics. This has also become apparent in other current challenges, starting with the area of sustainability.
The adaptation of our new strategy can be seen as a departure from fields of action. We are moving towards working in areas of opportunity that address three key areas of networking: “Working together”, “Sharing knowledge” and “Buying together”. Sustainability, digitalization and innovation are always taken into account.
The focus is on selected current topics, often on an interdisciplinary and cross-functional basis. This improves the handling of growing complexity, values the interfaces and also allows for a fluid, agile approach between the opportunity spaces.
Many familiar and tried-and-tested formats will remain in place. However, we will also break new ground and, with the new event space in Dortmund Harbour from 2024, we will also fill a real, physical space of opportunity with new offerings.
Accordingly, during the workshop, the NIRO team worked out which formats and offerings will remain and which new events could be of interest to the member companies.

Strategy is always ongoing
Strategy is a process and never finished. Even after we have filled the content of our opportunity spaces and the upcoming distribution of tasks, strategy design at NIRO will continue: a utilization concept for the new space is pending, the definition of sustainable event management is planned and next year we will write a new DNK report.
NIRO would like to take this opportunity to thank the team from the Mittelstand-Digital Zentrum Zukunftskultur: Beate, Holger and Gerrit, you gave us wonderful support during our strategy process, guided us through the workshops, helped us with structure and gave us new ideas. We now even know our way around Lego (again) and have an analytical, clear and strengthened view of what we do. And what always makes perfect strategic sense is to see what’s going on early on.
