Sustainable management plays an important role at KHS GmbH as one of the world’s leading manufacturers of filling and packaging systems in the beverage and liquid food sectors with subsidiaries and production sites in India, the USA, Mexico, Brazil and China.
KHS produces modern filling and packaging systems for the high-performance sector at its headquarters in Dortmund and at other plants in Germany.
2023 KHS has achieved gold status for the first time in the internationally established EcoVadis rating. The rating reflects the KHS Group’s steadily growing commitment and confirms its well-functioning sustainability management.
The extent to which employees are committed to sustainability is demonstrated by the financing of a photovoltaic system from private funds: KHS employees raised a total of €496,000 through their cooperative, MaGeno-Solar eG, which has 180 members. This money was used to install a solar system at the KHS site in Juchostrasse in Dortmund-Wambel, which is leased to KHS for its use. The system is owned by the cooperative, which distributes an annual return to its members.
The approximately 520,000 kilowatt hours of green electricity per year supplement the already comprehensive energy and environmental protection management of the plant and mechanical engineering company and demonstrably saveCO2. The system was commissioned at the end of August 2023 and produces more than 2,700 kWh of electricity per day on good sunny days, which is the average annual consumption of a three-person household. This means that the power required from the public grid can be reduced by up to 40 percent in some cases during the day. The response to the project was very positive right from the start. The works council, management, Group management and of course the employees supported the project and invested in their company’s climate protection.
The parent company Salzgitter AG awarded this commitment first prize in an internal competition for solutions to reduceCO2 emissions. NIRO is delighted with this example, which clearly shows how each and every one of us can make a big difference in terms of sustainability, even on a small scale, if we act together.
