Made in Westphalia as a guest at BURG Lüling GmbH & Co. KG

In cooperation with the SIHK zu Hagen, we have been visiting interesting companies in the region as part of the “Made in Westphalia” series since 2024. On July 9, 2025, we visited BURG Lüling GmbH & Co. KG in Hagen and gained impressive insights into a company that has been making its customers’ everyday lives easier with security technology for 135 years.

At BURG, security is the be-all and end-all in a company that is currently run by the fourth generation of the family.
Achim Lüling, CEO at BURG, welcomed our group and introduced us to his company.
BURG was founded in Volmarstein in 1890 and began manufacturing padlocks. As the need for security has evolved, the company’s innovative strength has always kept pace with the latest technical innovations.
Padlocks are finite; BURG opened up to industry and expanded its products for the locking sector. Today, the company produces locks and hinges for switch cabinets and housing construction, for furniture and lockers in the fitness and school sectors as well as security locking systems for windows for well-known customers. As an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer), BURG provides individual product solutions including all tools and molds.
In addition to mechanical locks, BURG has been developing and producing electronic locking systems since 2005. Smartlocks with RFID technology lock with intelligent functions and are a current user-friendly variant.

For Achim Lüling, transformation has a comprehensive meaning: it is about opening up new markets, developing new business models and innovative products. And it’s about the people who work at BURG. The shareholders at BURG stand for a value-oriented corporate culture and rely equally on young and experienced employees, who also live the transformation of traditional office work at the Hagen site in a very modern office environment, sometimes without fixed workstations, with their own lockers for their documents secured by BURG technology.

Achim Lüling then gave us a tour of the production facility and we were able to learn about the individual steps involved in the manufacture of various BURG products.
After the tour, the results of the SWOT analysis, for which all participants had noted down keywords during the tour, were compiled. In addition to small suggestions for improving the lighting in the production halls, there was unanimous praise for the tidy production and great appreciation for the impressive transformational power that is successfully leading this company, its products and employees into the digital age.

Many thanks to Achim Lüling and the BURG team for allowing us to gain these insights and get to know another strong company with Made in Westphalia.
