NIRO welcomes the new member company Magontec GmbH from Bottrop

The original company, Magnesiumgesellschaft mbH, was founded in Essen back in 1953. Production began in Bottrop in 1975, marking the start of resource-conserving recycling activities there.
Around 70 years after its foundation, the company, which specializes in the production and sale of advanced magnesium solutions, serves a wide range of industries, including the automotive, aerospace, electronics and construction industries.
With the branch in Bottrop, Magontec has four of its own sites for recycling magnesium, manufacturing high-quality magnesium alloys and producing anodes. In 2012, a newly built production site was opened in Romania for the production of anodes and with an annual recycling capacity of 6,000 tons. A production facility for pure magnesium with an annual capacity of 30,000 tons was added in China. Since 2016, the company has also had its own foundry there with an annual capacity of 60,000 tons. A new branch was opened in the USA in 2016 to develop the local market.
Magontec stands for decades of international experience and a global presence in the areas of sales and application technology. Our new member company offers a wide range of products and services related to magnesium alloys, which are known for their lightness, strength and corrosion resistance. These materials are used in various fields, including the manufacture of lightweight components for vehicles, the development of high-tech electronics and the construction of durable building structures.
Magontec is characterized by its innovative strength and commitment to quality. Through continuous research and development, the company strives to always offer its customers the latest and best magnesium solutions. In addition, Magontec attaches great importance to environmental protection and sustainability in production and throughout its business operations. The company is a specialist in the recycling of valuable materials for the recovery of magnesium. High-quality raw materials are recycled and the CO₂ footprint of the entire production process is 40 times smaller than the production of raw magnesium in the standard process. This improves the energy balance of water reservoirs and enables sustainable value retention.
With its international network of customers and partners, Magontec plays a leading role in the magnesium industry. NIRO is looking forward to the new “alloys” in the sense of interfaces, mergers, blends and contacts that enrich our network both in terms of content and personally.

5 questions for Mr. Christian Röhling, Director Supply Chain EU, Magontec GmbH

Christian Röhling, Director Supply Chain EU, Magontec GmbH © Magontec GmbH

NIRO: Mr. Röhling, welcome as a new member of the Industrie RuhrOst network!
Your company is now joining our network. What was the main reason for you to become a member of NIRO?
Christian Röhling: The main reason for us is the expectation of participating in the network that NIRO offers. The exchange with other industrial companies from the region seems very valuable to us and very important, especially in the current economic situation. The fact that we as a company want to benefit from the purchasing conditions that NIRO has agreed with its partners should certainly not go unmentioned.

NIRO: Which topics are currently particularly important in your company? What should be discussed in the network? What role does sustainability play at Magontec GmbH?
Christian Röhling: As a company in the fields of magnesium metal and recycling as well as cathodic corrosion protection, sustainable solutions are part of our corporate DNA and are therefore particularly important to us. Furthermore, the current market environment means that it is important for us to focus on optimizing our cost base, which has changed significantly in many areas in recent years.

NIRO: Which products, services or innovations from Magontec GmbH could also be of interest to other NIRO member companies?
Christian Röhling: Everyone probably has cathodic corrosion protection solutions such as our magnesium anodes in their basement hot water tanks. These need to be serviced regularly and replaced if necessary. Talk to your trusted installation company and ask for advice. Ideally, you should install a solution from our Correx product range directly. These solutions have a service life of at least 15 years.
Products from our “magnesium metal” range are mainly used in applications in the die casting industry. I see less benefit or interest from NIRO member companies in this area.

NIRO: What current challenges do you see for your company due to increasing digitalization processes and to what extent could being part of NIRO be helpful?
Christian RöhlingWe are very interested in exchanging experiences with other companies and would like to hear about best-practice solutions. But we are also happy to receive recommendations from partners who support the implementation of solutions in this area from the network. A small company like Magontec cannot have all the expertise in-house to meet all the requirements arising from digitalization on its own.

NIRO: And finally, a bit of wishful thinking: Which event can NIRO plan for you or your team?
Christian Röhling: On the one hand, I can think of events for the pragmatic implementation of the diverse requirements of recent times (keyword: LkSG). On the other hand, we are always interested in events where topics such as cross-interface collaboration (within the company, but also beyond company boundaries) or tools in the process industry are discussed.

NIRO: Thank you very much and here’s to good cooperation!
